Your first step to a smooth move should be at a local store to get a notebook just for your moving notes. A notebook is going to be your moving bible and you will find that having everything in one place is going to help you more than anything else.
Keep Everything Organized
Your notebook should contain names, numbers and contacts for all of your utilities in both locations. When you are making lists, they should be spread out and everything should have its own piece of paper so that you can make notes alongside the lists, keeping everything together. Turning on and moving utilities can be cumbersome and take time on the phone. You should date everything and make sure that you have a record of deposits you’ve made. A notebook is also a great way to keep track of who you have notified with change of address forms. Your notebook can also keep track of boxes that you have packed in advance. If you label your boxes, as well as, numbering them, you can list what are in the boxes, what room they come from, what number they are, and where they belong at your new place.
Document Your Belongings, with a Camera
Almost as important as your notebook when you are moving out of your house is a camera. You will need to document important or expensive pieces of furniture if you hire movers, just in case. A digital camera would be best, not one that uses film or a phone, you want to make sure that the photos are in a safe place and you can print enlarged versions if you need to. Taking photos of how electronics are plugged in is also a great way to hook things back up when you get to your new home. A camera will also come in handy if you are moving out of a rental and into either another rental or a new home. Taking photos before you move into a rental and after you leave one can be very important if you are trying to get a deposit back.
One of the best moving tips is to plan ahead and then make sure that you pack enough clothes for a few days just in case something happens during the move, and you can’t get to your things immediately. Packing a separate toilet bag, snack bag, medication bag, and a laptop or tablet is also a good idea during your moving time. The last thing you are going to want to do it dig around looking for things to wear the very day you moved.
Because moving from one home to another is such a daunting task, you need to start purging unwanted, overused, and broken items long before it is time to actually move. Movers can charge per box or item and if you might be able to save a good deal of money if you don’t try to move items that you don’t want. Purged items that you no longer use but that are still in good condition, can be donated to local charities, local churches, homeless shelters, or even your friends who are in need.
